  12. Fax Groups & Fax Classes

All fax modems use the same protocol to communicate with fax mahines and/or other fax modems: Group III. But there are several protocols that fax modems use to communicate with the computer: Class 1, Class 2 and Class 2.0. Some old modems support Class 1 only protocol, some support Class 2 only, some support both Class 1 and Class 2.

  17. The fax software you use with your fax modem can support Class 1 only faxing, or it can support Class 2 fax modems, or it can support both Class 1 and Class 2.

  19. Adaptive answering
  20. ------------------
  21. To use LineShare for receiving both fax and data calls, you need a fax modem that has a feature called "adaptive answering". LineShare switches that feature on, so both fax and data calls can be answered by the modem.
  22. Adaptive answering is a part of Class 2 protocol specifications, so all Class 2 modems are supposed to support it. You can check your modem by typing "AT+FAA=1<return>" - the modem should answer with "OK".
  23. Adaptive answering is implemented in some Class 1 modems, too. Almost all Rockwell-based Class 1 modems support adaptive answering.  You can check your modem by typing "AT+FAE=1<return>" - the modem should answer with "OK".

  25. You can use LineShare with modems that don't support adaptive answering just to be able to run fax and data software without conflict, but in this case you'll have to select the type of incoming calls to be received (either fax or ARA/Data) manually.

  27. Fax packages
  28. -------------------
  29. 1. FaxSTF: this product can be configured to support both Class 1 and Class 2 fax modems. If you use the version 3.0 or higher, make sure that "LineManager" option is switched off.

  31. 2. FAXcilitate: This is a software based on FaxSTF, but it supports Class 1 protocol only.

  33. 3. Delrina FaxPro: the product supports both Class 1 and Class 2. We recommend to use it with Class 2 modems only (Select the CTB Class 2 driver in Delrina FaxPro).

  35. 4. 4-Sight Fax: supports Class 2 protocol only.

  37. 5. FaxNetwork by Glenwarne/Supra: supports Class 2 protocol only.

  41. Fax&Data scripts: which one to use.

The table below lists some popular modems. If the modem supports adaptive answering, the second column contains '•'. If you use fax Class 1 software with your modem, you should select the script from the third column, if Class 2 - from the fourth column. If a script supports many modems, on of the script options is "Modem:". The name of the modem definition file to be selected for such script can be found in the last column.

  66. Some modems support Class 1 and Class 2.0 faxing. If you have such a modem and Class 2.0 fax software (CommuniGate FaxGate, for example), you should use the Fax Class2.0&ARA&Data script: Class 2 and Class 2.0 protocols are NOT the same.

  68. Chapter 2. If you want to use voice software
  69. ----------------------------------------
  70. When working with voice-mail, LineShare passes the call to the voice mail software as soon as the first ring is detected. Then it is the job of the voice software to detect the type of the call. If a call should be forwarded to some other application (fax, ARA, BBS, etc),  the voice mail application calls LineShare and instructs it to switch the line to the proper virtual port.
  71. For each voice system, a special script exists: MaxFax&ARA&Data, Supra Voice&Fax1&ARA&Data, etc. See the description in the Script Docs folder. Also, your voice software manual should describe the configuration settings to be used with LineShare.

  73. Chapter 3. If you want to use data software only
  74. -------------------------------------------
  75. If you need LineShare to run several data applications simultaniously (ARA & BBS, for example), you can use one of scripts listed above - just leave the Fax subport unused.
  76. If your modem is not a fax modem, you should use the "NoFax - ARA&Data" script, and select the proper modem definition file from the "Modem:" option menu.
